Several playmates witnessed tho accident. The deceased's parents reside at the seaside. CHRISTCHURCH. last night. This morning the body of Albert Broughton, of Christchurch, fruiterer, Tyre s found floating face downwards, m tlie Avon below t,he Dallington bridge. At the inquest Thomas James Brown, assistant bailiff of the Magistrate's Court, stated he had been m possession of deceased's house since Monday m respect of a distress warrant for £120 10s. Deceased had been worried a good ileal about the matter. He tried to borrow money to pay the claim off, but had failed. Witness' last saw deceased at about 6 o'clock m the morning, when deceased* went out. A verdict was returned that deceased was found drowned.
•, A : somewhat serious motor .car acci- i dent happened last week about two miles from Wairakei, on the road to Taupo, where a large American car, a 95 hursa-powcr "Thomas Flier," collided with ' one of Mr .&anipson's chrs, driven by^fe, young man named Butcher, and containing three passengers. The latter car was badly -djauaged, and the occupants weV-o .severely shaken and bruised. One \vas thrown through the: glass wind screen and had his face badly cut. Yhe occupants of the other car, a party of Americans, were uninjured. A telegram from Waimate states : A regrettable death occurred on Monday. Mr W. (>. Leader, a- plumber, was about to have his teeth drawn, and was put ■-under chloroform by Dr. Barclay, but before Mr Coventry,' the dentist, started to draw the tbeth Leader died under the anesthetic. All efforts to restore animation Avefe unsuccessful. At ■ the inquest a verdict wnk returaied thht deceased died from the, effects" of*.chloroform, administered^ while deceased had ' fatty overgrowth of the^heart. Deceased s.arfed m business at Waimate some months ago, and was only 27 years of ag.. He leaves a wife ancl throe young children.
A-yoilnsj man named Fred Parker, son of Mr "C* W. -Parlcer, Kaitaia, North of Auckland, fell; from a waggon last Friday afternoon, while carting butter boxes .from the Awanui steamer shed to Ivaitaia - dnirv factory. He v*as found lving.bn- the" road, terribly injured, and Hvas conveye-1 to Mr Matthewa's reside'iice near by. It was found, that hi.-? jaw was b&,d!y : broken and «his chest 'crushed, and he • was removed to tho Mangonui Hospital on .Saturday and died'on Sunday. No one witnessed the accident. It is supposed that the horses shied and boi ted and puljed Parker off his seat, -and that the front wheel of the waggon went over him; He was a ; steady young- man, and a capable driver.
