SAVAGE NATIVES IN GERMAN
BRISBANE, Jan. 21. When tho last steamer arrived m Brisbane from German NoaV Guinea, she brought news of the reported murder of two scientists and a number of carriers ,on NeAv /Ireland. From passengers aboard the steamer Coblenz it ' was learnt, however, that the affray Avas not so serious, as wa« at first reported. The scientists succeeded m escaping from their savage assailants, though a number of carriers lost their lives. The lavo scientists .m question Avere Messrs Keampf and Daneger, who had been deputed by the German Govern-ment-to report on the timber (growing on NeAv '.lreland. They took with them as carriers a number pf .native boys, and it appears that shortly after landing on New Ireland, the local natives made a savage attack on the party. Only riieagre details are available, but it is believed that about six native earners were killed, and the two white men had a very narrow escape, Daneger sufferinig frftm a severe Avound from an attacking natiA*e's tomahaAvk. The two white men returned to Raboul, and an expedition Ava-s sent out to make reprisals. ; The natives m German NeAV Guinea have been giving a good deal of trouble. There has been tribal fighting of late, and a number have lost their lives. A few Aveeks ago eight natives were killqd by rival tribesmen at New Recklenberg, and were eaten.
