ECONOMIC EFFECTS.

THE COST TO CANTERBURY. (Per Press Association.) OHRISTOHURCH, this day. Attempts were made by a reporter today to collect information regarding the economic effeots of the strike m the city and m Canterbury generally. It was found, however, that at best only approximate estimates could be obtained. It is probable that the total cost of the strike to those actually engaged m it as well as to those who were affected by it will never be fully known. Some rough estimate of the loss m wages that strikers suffered is possible, but it is extremely difficult — if not altogether impossible — to estimate even what the distriot has lost owing to atopp»§e of production and owing to the ovdera that have not been received. Ofee estimate— admittedly enly taking Into account loss m wages and part of

th« loss m production— put* the total at over £20,000, the details being : Water siders' wages, £10,000 r drivers' wages, £700 ; foundries and confectionery and other workers affected by the * strike (wages), £3000; loss m production, foundries, confectionery and other works £9000; total, £22,700. The farming community has suffered considerably, owing to the unsatisfactory character of the first wool sale, which was postponed from the date upon which it was to have been held owing to the strike, and the dislocation of transport facilities which attended it. The consequence has been that there has been a tightness of money as far as the primary producers m Canterbury have been concerned. It is anticipated, however, that if a month's fine weather is experienced, the farming community will be able to recover itself. Crop prospects are good provided a spell of fine weather is experienced.
