THE AUSTRALIAN VISIT.

. MEETING OF ENTHUSIASTS. .T,Ue special meeting called by thei Poverty Bay Cricket Association was well attended last evening. The object of the meeting was to c6nsider a letter from the New . Zealand Cricket Council, asking if the local Association were prepared to guarantee 60 per cent, of the gate takings, the minimum to be £50, for a match lasting two days against tne team from Australia which . visit, the Dominion m February and March next year. Mr H. Hill, chairman. of the management committee of the Poverty Day Association, outlined the object of the meeting, expressing his belief that the matter of finance would not present any difficulty. Mr G. Stock was voted to the chair, and stated that he had yesterday spoken to a number of old cricketers, and had collected £14 14s towards the guarantee. He considered it would be better If the guarantee was subscribed by as many people as possible, because m that way it would create more interest m the proceedings. Gisborn© had never before been afforded an opportunity of witnessing on its own ground the play of such good .cricketfers as the Australian eleven would contain, and it behoved the' local Association to strive hard to get them to play here, for it would give a, great stimulus to the game m this district, and would serve as. a valuable object-lesson to the young players, '-The Chairman said that it would be the correct thing fqr the cricketers to help themselves, and he suggested that ttiey should subscribe £55 of the guarantee! and. that the townspeople be asked to ; raise the balance. This course the meeting agreed- upon. Messrs G. Stock, G. B. Oman, and D. J. garry. were appointed a committee to erideayor to raise the £25 from the townspeople. The hon; secretary of .Jhe local union, Mr F. Walker, "was instructed to wive to the New Zealanfl ; Cricket Council, intimating that the local Association desired the • Australians to visit Gisborne, and that the guarantee would be forthcoming before January 20th. It was .decided to call another meeting for < January sth. Apologies were received, per Mr H. Hill, from Messrs W. F. Cederwall, W.L . Clayton, and R. G. Hallamore, who had all notified their willingness to assist m sub•Tffhton 1 to the guarantee.'
