THE DEATH PENALTY.

(Press Assn.— By Telegraph— Copyright.) (Received Dec. 18, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 17. Ernest Kelly has been hanged at Manchester for murdering- Bardsley, a bookseller at Oldham, on 26th" July. Several hundred Oldham wonien and youth-, marched to Manchester to protest against Mr McKenna's refusal to allow an appeal. (Received Dec. 18, ll a.m.) Sympathy with Kelly was due to the fact that Edward Hilton, his accomplice, was reprieved. Mr McKenna (Home Secretary) explained that Hilton was under eighteen and was mentally defective. The hangman who executed Biddle at Lyttelton on Saturday was not the man who hanged Tahi Kaha at Auckland. He was a farmer, and he told press representatives that he had volunteered for the task not for any pecuniary gain (he was prepared to forego any fee), hut from a sense of publio duty, as he was not sure when anybody's wife might be attacked, like Mrs Lilley, and ho " considered that th© community should be protected.
