NEW ZEALAND NAVY.
AUSTRALIA'S ENCOURAGEMENT. (1-rws Assn.— By Telegraph— Copyright.) (Received Dec. 17, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, December 17. The Herald says that Australians will weloomo the decision of the New Zealand Government in^ favor of a New Zealand navy, because it is the only scheme which fits perfectly with the Australian ideal 'of a Pacific fleet composed of Australian, Canadian, and British sections^ but Australians wiU know that the one thing more than another which will prejudice the success of the scheme will bo any attempt on Australia's part to claim any sort of ascendancy or control over whatever force New Zealand decides upon. If tliis great scheme is ever to see the light, Australia and New Zealand must enter as equals. The success of New Zealand's infant project is far too important to the success of the Anglo-' Saxon race m the Pacific for us to imperil it by any sort of right to claim ascendancy. This danger is well realised m Australia, and is one New Zealand need never fear."
