A MONOPOLY.
m* SIR JAMES CARROLL AND DAIRY SHIPMENTS. (From our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. | A question was put to . the Minister j of Customs yesterday by Sir Jas. Car- 1 roll, who asked whether the Govern- 1 ment is aware that one association in New Zealand has a monopoly of all the dairy freight tonnage from New Zealand to London, which is not in the best interests of the dairy industry of this Dominion, and whether the Government will have the whole question of Shipping freights between, New Zealand and England investigated, with thp object of ascertaining — (1) Whether anything is being done that can be regarded as a monopoly or trust that should be prevented by law? (2) Whether the Government should take steps to subsidise and introduce a new line of steamers capable of carrying .insulated cargo'.between England and this Dominion, with a stipulation that sucn now line shall not thereafter make any compact with any other shipping .ring or combination without at least first obtaining the sanction of the New Zealand Government?
