HARBOR LOAN PROPOSALS.
MEETING AT TE- KARAKA. ! ADDRESSED BY MR LYSNAR. \ Te Karaka residents were addressed j upon the subject of the harbor poll by I Mr W. D. Lysnar last evening. There ! was an attendance of about fifty. Mr •. C. A. Foe*te. was voted to the chair, and in his opening remarks expressed the ' opinion that even Mr Lysnar had not ■ thought out the proper shipping facili- ( ties required to cope with the trade of '■ the district, and he considered the people ' had beep too indifferent on the subject , in the past/ ' » Mr Lysnar, in concurring to some extent with the chairman's latter remark, blamed the Board for not having brought < the outer harbor, question before the n, people in terms of the special Act. They had never had the question properly put before them. He contended that the district had not benefited by the past, 3d, and went on to point out that under the od 1910 Act the Board had had £26,000 freed from tho Public Trustee towards the cost of the present } extension and the balance due on the Maui. Sipce ied that period they had incurred an overdraft of £43,000, making a total of £69,000, or within £5000 of the money actually needed for the dredge and Langland's contract. A leading native had ►--" characterised the river work in the same light as a .drunkard, who would dissipate his means without any good result. Emphasising the value of an outer harbor, ho took the case of- ' a - Mangtitu settler. If they had an outer harbor it «• would work out as follows : 3000 lat sheep at 40 sheep to the ton — 75 tons. An outer harbor Would save 5s per ton Efor lighterage, and at least 3s per ton for wharfage. This would mean a saving of 8s per ton, or a total .of £30/ '■A> On 250 bales of wool at fiye to the ton an * he would save 5s per tori' lighterage on i • '/ 50 tons, making a gross saving of £42 'I- 10.;, and this did not take into account je . u numerous other items on which there ij 4v_ujd bo a saving with an outer harbor. Q-l It was useless, he declared, for tho opponents of the' outer harbor scheme tp md Ba y the results would bo problematical, luv j^ r Lysnar was subjected to. frequent f 0 ! 1 interruptions, and was" freely questioned 7" by Mr G. W. Humphreys, a member of ' the Board, whilst Mr R. Sherratt, ■*• ■ another member, also defended the ■* e * Board's action. ___ Votes, of thanks were accorded to Mr Lysnar and the chairman.
