MAN THE LIFEBOAT !

LONDON, November 4. Tho lifeboat crews at Yarmouth, Caister, and Gorleston effected a thrilling rescue. Responding to signals of distress m the shape of brightly burning flares at sea, they launched their boats, and pulling out some distance found the herring steamer Emerald m a sinking condition. Tho lifeboats took off eight men who were still on board, and subsequently picked up five others who, m a small boat, had previously left the Emerald when she became waterlogged at tho fishing grounds. Those who stood by the sinking craft had managed to bring the vessel within a few miles of Yarmouth, when they succeeded m attracting the attention of the lifeboat stations by using kerosene soaked cloths as flares. The whole of the Emerald's catch of about 120,000 herrings was lost.
