EAST COAST LIGHTHOUSES.
PORTLAND ISLAND TELEPHONE TOO COSTLY.
(From our Parliamentary -.. Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day* The equipment of a new cable between the lighthouse at East Island and the mainland was effected by the Hinemoa a week or two ago, and 1 the same is now working satisfactorily, so the Secretary for Marine told a HeraJd representative to-day. Mr Airport added tliat the coast-line was very severe on the cable at this point. Questioned as to the landslides at East Island, he stated there had been no further developments of this nature recently. In response to an inquiry as to the fitting up of telephonic communication with Portland Island, he explained that telephonic facilities would no doubt be most desirable, but the matter had been looked into, and it was found that three miles of cable would be required m addition to twenty miles of land lme, and although Mr Ormond had generously offered assistance', the Government had decided that there was not the money available this year.
