THOUSANDTH BIRTHDAY.
LONDON, August b. The borough of Tamworth, once a Saxon stronghold, has just celebrated its 1000 th birthday, it owes its foundation to Ethelfleda, daughter of King Alfred the Great.
In 874 the Danes penetrated as far as llepton, m Derbyshire. Tamworth fell under the ra-vnges, and "lay for nearly forty years a nwuss of blackened ruins."
Just a thousand summers ago this July the courageous Princess' marches* at the head of ner^army W Tarn worth, recaptured the home of' hir ancestors, rebuilt the town, and restored its fortress. •
Its massive donjon keep stands today, as then, on a. huge mound, which overlooks the tranquil confluence of the rivers Tame and Anker.
This historic borough has not been spoiled by the modern spirit. It remains an old-Vorld country town of 10,OOU inhabitants, with : many quaint old customs.
