Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, congratulated the district on the almost total absence of crime. True bills were returned m four criminaJ cases. A young woman was fined 10s for making a false declaration, the judge remarking tliat such cases should be dealt with by a magistrate. Legislation to that end shoulel be introduced. WELLINGTON, this day. Victoria College met the Otago University at hockey to-day. The former won by 3 to 2. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Patrick Ashman, a resident of Ashburton, who had been on remand on a charge of drunkenness ever since April, died m the hospital this morning. At the Supreme Court this morning, the' jury found a verdict of £3CO for plaintiff m the case, J. A. Newel! v. Lyttelton Times Company, an action for 'libel. Plaintiff is gaol surgeon at Lyttelton gaol, and the libel was contained m an article commenting on the gaol system.
