SIX-ROOMED DWELLING DESTROYED.
At 3.45 this morning the Whataupoko hell sounded an alarm, and a bright glare m the direction of Mangapapa indicated the scene of the fire. The brigade started out m the motor tender, but on reaching Roebuck road it was seen that the outbreak was beyond the water supply area, so several of the brigadesmen proceeded to the scene m case their services were required to check the iiro spreading to adjoining buildings. it ■was found that a six-roomed house behind the Mangapapa school, m Perry street, owned by Mr R. B. Dobson, and occupied by Mr J. H. Dennis, was enveloped m flames. The building, which was practically a new one, burned for a longer period than usual before it w,as demolished. Mr Dennis, who had been spending the evening at a neighbor's place, retired about 11.30, when everything was apparently safe. He was awakened about 3.3(X by smoke coming into Ms room. He was unable to save any of his furniture or effects. Mr Dennis had recently' shifted his family tb the country, and he was arranging to; dispose of his furniture by auction. The house was insured for £425 m the Victoria Office, and the furniture ?or £100 m the Standard Office. Mr Dennis will be a heavy loser. . For half an hour yesterday a chimney at the residence, of Mr R, j. Reynolds, of "Sandown," Ghilders Toad, was emitting fire. A message was sent to the brigade station*, and an alarm was given at a few:jninutes to 4 o'clock. The brigadesmenVproceeded to the scene on the motor tender, but their services, fortunately, were not required, a-s the blaze had been extinguished m the meantime. / :-.< • SSSSSSSSSSSSSS ■ '
