REVIEW OF THE OPERATIONS
The Manawatu Standard of Wednesday states : — From a reliable source >a reporter learned what had been going on at the scene of operations during the last few days. The first coaxing efforts had been successfully carried out, and by Thursday night the boat was on the verge of deep water. Everything eocmed to point to a successful effort, and any minute it was expected that th'boat would be m deep water. But the fates Willed otherwise. Thursday night came, and with it dirty weather, and then fell the hopes of the salvaging party, but only temporarily. The hawsers held, and it was hoped! they would do so till the weather abated. No developments occurred till yesterday morning, when two sharp sounds rent the air Two hawsers had snapped^ and m a trice the Indrabarah was being driven back to her old position, 'where at present she is. All the work of the past few days- had m a moment been brought to nought, and the thoughts of an al-~ most successful attempt being m a moment nullified must, to say the least of it, have been exasperating. Nothing, it was stated, could have held ths ship against the seas that broke over her. The anchors Mill not be lost, as they are both buoyed, #nd only have to be picked up. The tug Terawhiti is standing by at the present. Guesses as to the distance from shore have been apparently wide of the mark, for it is stated the steamer is at least 500 yards out. The rope along which the travelling basket runs is of a length of 300 fathoms (600 yards), and about 100 yard: of this is above land. The steamer at any time during the past three week: has never been closer to the beach than 500 feet. All that is wanted for a successful re-floating is favorable weather. The fact that the attempt just made has b^en only frustrated by the vagaries of the weather makes refloating almost a certainty oh the next spring tide — ten days hence. In the meantime, all that can be done is to watch and wait. "There is no doubt," said the informant m conclusion, "that the ship will be got off if the elements are- anything at all m favor of the attempt."
