CALCUTTA SWEEP WINNERS
(Press Assn.—By Telegraph— Copyright.) LONDON, Juno 15. Mr W. Howie, a hunting man of independent means, won £50,C00 m the Calcutta sweepstakes. LONDON, June 7. Mr Lionel Rothschild drew Nimbus m a sweep conducted at Lausanne, m Switzerland, and his ticket was worth £6000. The Calcutta Derby -Sweep is the biggest m the world. It is run under the auspices of the Calcutta Turf Club, and the Indian Government takes a percentage from the receipts, whj.ch sometimes reach the enormous .figured of £100,000", the tickets being 15 rupees, or £1 each. There are many stories of fortunes having been made m a moment by holders of tickets m tins lottery, and the first prize has often fallen to the holder of a single ticket. On one occasion the lucky person was the little, toddling daughter of a half-caste guard on one of the Indian railways. Another year it went to a clerk m the office of one of tlie' banks m Bombay, and it is said that m this instance the fortunate man calmly threw up his job, collected his money, and cleared off back to his home. He was a Scotsman.
