NATIVE RATES.
MINISTER'S ASSURANCE
The Counties' deputation that went to Wellington to interview the Native Minister last week on the subject of the collection of Native rates met with a measure of success, inasmuch as it obtained the Hon. W. H. Herries' assurance of assistance m the matter of enforcing the recovery of rates. A member of the deputation informed a reporter that the Minister's reply m effect was that if a. ' Council obtained judgment against nominated owners of Native lands, his reading of the Act was that the judgment against one owner could be endorsed against the whole of the owners m the block. The Minister gave his assurance that this would be done — that Native Land Courts would have the judgment recorded against the land. One of the difficulties m the past has been, lhat if judgment was obtained against a nominated owner only that person's share m the block coald be affected thereby: In the matter of customs ry land — 'and held by Natives .and that had not been passed through the Native Land Court — the Minister expressed the opinion that these lands should also pay rates. He said he w.ould see what could be done to make an amending clause to give the Councils revenue from this source.
