The Chief Postmaster was advised to-day from Tuparoa. that mails for Pakihiroa and Tapuwaeroa could not be despatched to-day on account of the flooded state of the rivers.

In regard to the scheme for planting the Wellington Town Belt, 5^7000 young trees have been ordered for delivery during the next month or two. A start has already been made with the work, the M un i c ip a i Forester having planted the slopes of Mount Victoria overlooking Oriental Bay, an exposed spot, and if the planting is successful here, it is thought that the scheme generally will be so.

Tho well known property, Pah Farm and Pah College, at Onohunga (better known as St. John's Collegiate School), has been purchased' by the Sisters of Mercy. It is proposed to erect headquarters on the land for the Sisters of Mercy, and an up-to-date boarding school. A building to replace the Star, of the Sea Orphanage at Takapuna, Auckland, which was recently destroyed by fire, will be erected on the property.

A mass meeting will be held m the Opera House at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday-, when the sneakier will be the Veil. Archdeacon Williams, Revs. W. Grant, L. Dawson Thomas, and Clarkson. The latter will deal with Bishop Cleary's "Seven knotty points." A mass meeting will also be held at St. John's Hall, Mangapapa, after evening services, the speaker being the Rev. F. W. Chatterton.

Times says : A dairy Company operating along this coast, which recently distinguished itself by sending Home a consignment of butter containing too much moisture, has gained further distinction. It appears that alterations were being carried out at the factory, and a quantity of mortar found its way into the cream vats and eventually into the butter. When the new blend of butter reached the Home Market it Was evidently not appreciated by the Londoners, and! no time Was lost m communicating by next mail for the factory not to repeat the dose.

Tlie Napier Thirty Thousand Club are sending, out circulars as far south as Eketahuna suggesting that a children's week be held m Napier during the warm, weather, and inviting the co-operation of towns favorable to the > idea. It is proposed that children from various localities should arrive at Napier on days to be selected. For instance, thore who travelled to the town oh Monday would leave on the following day, and Tuesday's arrivals would leave on Wednesday, thus preventing congestion. By this means it is hoped to give country children a pleasant trip to the seaside.

Wednesday, July 16, will be observed as a public holiday m the Government offices througlwut the Dominion for the celebration of Arbor Day. In order that the movement may be made as successful as possible, it is stated m the Gazette, the Government hopes that the Mayors of various municipalities and chairmen of local bodies will place the matter prominently before the people of the Dominion, and do all they can to encourage the planting of public reserves and other available lands, both public and private, with trees suited to the locality.

Shortly after 6 o'clock on" Sunday night a "fault" occurred m the Christchurch City Council's electrical system, and all the lights connected with it suddenly went out. The City Council's engineer and his officers immediately began a search for the "fault," and, at a. late hour, were successful. Until about a quarter to nine all buildings served exclusively by the Council system were m darkness, but at that time the current was switched on to some of the consumers. Naturally m a number of cases a great deal of inconvenience was caused by the shortage, and complaints were numerous.

A distressing accident occurred during the progress of the Te Aroha Rod and ,Gun Club's shooting carnival on Wednesday afternoon. Mr T. Neil, a member of the Ohinewai Club was just removing an empty cartridge from one barrel of his automatic gun, when the cartridge m the other, barrel exploded. The charge passed through his left wrist -and became embedded m the muscle above the elbow. First aid was promptly „ administered, and the unfortunate man

was conveyed to Dr Kenny's, and thence

to Glencair'n Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate the arm below the. elbow. Owing 1 to the severe wound m the muscle above the elbow, it is uncertain whether the sufferer will not have to lose the remaining portion of his arm. On latest inquiry, it was learned that the pa-t'ient was doing as well as can be expected, though suffering very much from shock as well as from the injuries sustained.
