HOCKEY.
FIELD DAY AT THE RESERVE
Hockey players spent the holiday to-day in a somewhat strenuous way. This morning two matches were played, a men's Saturday* . representative team being pitted against a men's Thursday representative team, and . the other game was between last year's ladies' touring team and the next best team. Then this afternoon a seven-aside, tournament was held. The reserve was the scene of all these activities; a good number of spec tators were present, and they witnessed some splendid matches.
MEN'S MATCH
This match, played during the forenoon, was a particularly willing go, and a more evenly contested game could hardly bo witnessed. From the bully-off there was no lack of fast play, the ball being made to travel up and down the field with rapidity. During the first spell Hawkins shot a splendid goal for the Saturday team, and although the fo*mer tried hard to score before half-time w&s called their attacks were nullified by the careful pla/ of the opposing backs, Olsen being especially prominent in effecting saves. Soon after play resumed again the Thursday men- set up a hot pressure, and it was not long before Cassin found the net, and a fovy minutes later he. repeated the performance. The Saturday team then took a turn, but their invasions were repulsed, the attacking forces meeting their Waterloo when they reached Armstrong. However, Huston succeeded in evading the line of defence, and equalised the score by notching another goal for the Saturday team. The game thus ended in a draw— 2 all. Messrs A. E. Rees and W. Lewis were referees. GIRLS'- MATCH. . in some respects this, game was disappointing, for. the, last year's reps, proved much too strong JOr. the second team, and when the latter found the odds so much against them some of their players 'did not appear anxious to bustle, probably reserving their energy for the afternoon's tournament. The reps, piled : on the goals in quick succession, but- there were times when they had to defend hard, especially during the second half of the' game. The seconds had hard lUck in not. scoring two or- three times, Goals were scored for the reps, by R. Malcolm (3), I. Pearce (3), B. Butterfield.' M. Tairlie, and Mv Malcolm. Mr- H,„ Gawett, was referee.
