WHIRLED ROUND A SHAFT.
A BROKEN LEG
A nasty accident happened at, Auckland to an employee of the Kauri Timber Company, named Charles Bonella, aged 35, a single man, living m Hayden street. Bonella, who is an experienced sawyer, went down to the floor below his. bench to put the belt on. v It is a rule of the company that this shall not be done while the engine is running. Bonella's assistant also suggested that the attempt should not be made until the engine was stopped. Bonella apparently took the risk, and made a couple of attempts., which were unsuccessful. The shaft protrudes several ,feet the other . side .of the pulley. The injured man started to walk round to get the other side of the shaft, but the strm,-*; of his apron became caught, and the unfortunate man was whirled round the shaft. His legs struck the low ceiling, and this caused his clothing to tear away, the result being that he was heavily thrown to the floor. Dr. Casement Aickin was. summoned by the mill manager, *and after attending to Bonella's injuries, sent him off to the hospital. Bonella was suffering from a broken ley and sundry abrasions aboiit the shoulder. How he escaped so lightly is remarkable.
