There was an interruption of the telegraph wires south of Wairoa to-day, and work for and from Gisborne was considerably delayed. Cable advice was received from London to-day by the secretary of Messrs Johns, Bannister and Co., Mr P. Andrew. ' that a model of the motor cycle patent had been made, and that prospects were ' good. A trial test is being held this i week. An impromptu but happy gathering '"was held at the Masonic Hotel on Saturday night, when presentations were made . by the . members of the Northern Foot- " ball League to Mr L. The bachelors of Makaraka held a "smoko" m the Makaraka and Matawhero Hall on Saturday evening. Mr H. D. Robinson presided, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The following toast-list was honored: — "The King," "The Ladies," "Football," "Kindred Sports," "Visiting -Members." During the evening musical items were given by Messrs W. Jones, Normington, B. Abraham, G. Steggall, F. Jones, Baker, and F. Stacy. The president, on behalf of the Matawhero cricket and foothall clubs, presented Mr G. Bartletts with a case of pipes, suitably inscribed^ Mr Bartletts, who is leaving the district, m a few words thanked those present for their gift. The gathering terminated with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." The Cromwell Argus states that al striking illustration of the extent to J which the pastoral country has been denuded through the rabbit pest and overstocking is to be found on the Dunstan range, a short distance from Cromwell. In a certain gully is to be seen a huge mass of rock, which at some time has alipped away from a bluff higher up. On top of this is a deposit of something like a foot of soil, but the sides of the rock being so steep and smooth on all sides, the top is isolated from stock or ; rabbits. The result is that on the summit there ia an abundant growth of native tussock, a veritable oasis m the desert, for the country all round carries little or no vegetation m comparison therewith.
After commenting on the number* of .. pigs condemned by the Government inspectors as suffering from tuberculosis, '"'the Te Aroha Mail says: "It is time that a decisive step was taken by the Government to institute a thorough inves- . -ligation throughout tha Dominion con- > coming the pig-raising industry. One local grower stated that he bought a ..sow and eight young one?, and after raising and fattening them for market, T./had to destroy the lot, owing to their being diseased. As matters stand it is . .certain that interest m the pist-raising industry will soon fade away. One local .'.grower who fed numbers of young pigs on cooked food lost on one consignment ■ about £6. He considers that tne dis- '_ c ease was bred m the pigs. It is therefor© quite an unsafe investment to purr! J .chase .pigs, m the open market." -.« At the Daffodil Show, held on March
