, At the dedication of a monument to the victims of the battleship Maine disaster, Mr Taft declared that the possession of the Philippines gave the United States an Asiatic sta-tjus, brought her close to -China, and gave them a double interest m the Pacific. They i must accept this responsibility, using it for the general good of the world.
