The editor, Mr George Newett, has retracted the libel on Mr Roosevelt, published m the neAvspaper Iron Ore, accusing the ex-President of intemperance. The jury awarded six cents damages, complying with Mr Roosevelt's request. . j Under the Michigan laws' Mr Roosejvelt bears his own costs of the trial. • (Received June 2. 8 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 1. The judge directed" the jury to return a verdict for nominal damages, bacause, although Mr Roosevelt was fully entitled to exemplary damages, he had pleaded _m defendant's favor, and was willin^-io forego damages if his character "-were vindicated. The judge held that-Newett thought he was doing a public service m calling attention to the supposed failing of a public man.
