(Press Assn.— By Telegraph— Copyright.) (Received June 2, io a.m.) NEW YORK, June 1. Tlie international 500 miles automobile race at Indianopolis resulted : Avon 1, Jules 2, Goux 3. The average speed was 76_ miles per hour. Goux, Chartes and Merz finished tho last lap with their cars m flames, Goux securing third place.

A great international motor race over a distance of 500 miles was to be decided m the United States on May 30. The contest promised to be the most strenuous yet held m the world. Every entrant m the race required to have an accredited speed of at least 75 miles an hour. The event as to take place on the Indianapolis motor speedway — the Brooklands of America. — which has a. circuit of 2£ miles. |The track surface is vitrified brick. The appointments for public comfort at this speedway are unequalled m any other part of the world, the grandstands alone seating 60,000, whilst there is ample accommodation around the track for 200,000 spectators. This year England made a bold bid. to carry off the great event. Mr Percy Lambert, m his wonderful 25 h.p. Talbot (which has covered 103| miles m an hour) and M. Gnyot, on his fine 30 h.p. 6-cylinder Sunbeam, which at one period held most of the distance world's records up to 12 hours, both went across to compete for the £10,000 worth of prizes which this big annual event carries. France also had two first-class representatives m the field, Mesrs Goux and Zaccarelli having entered on two fast Peugeqt cars, the make of machine that carried off last year's Blue Riband road event, the' French Grand Prix. The contest- -promised to be a veritable battle of speed kings. Last year this race was won by J. Dawson on a "National," an American' made car, which carved' out the 500 miles m the •remarkable time, of 6hrs. 21mins. 6secs., the average speed, including stops for petrol, oil, and tyre replacements, being 78.9 miles "per liohr. Tne American sporting public have taken to automobile racing, arid "it appears to be now more popular than horse racing.
