It was well known that the Now Zealand Shipping Company was interested in the Federal Line, and that the Union Company was continuing to run the four steamers recently purchased for the West of England trade under the Federal flag, but he knew no further understanding. Certainly some of the companies were on sufficiently friendly terms to lend steam- | ers occasionally when other companies ran short. The suggestions made in the cablegram was speculative, and, as far as they knew, without foundation in fact.
