"THE MERCHANT OF VENICE." t
Ifc has been definitely arranged for the ■Gisborne , Shakespeare Cluib to hold its first publio reading this session, on June 7 sth, ii_* Wbinray'g hall. • The play to be taken is f The -Merchant of Venice," and a cast, considered to 'be a very fitrohg one, has been made. Mr E. H. Mann has spent some time in : arranging the play for a public reading, and'as the 1 club lias had it •upd-ei* study before, aiid will put in a number 'of rehearsals ' front now on, the pubU« can rely On- being provided with a veal ly fine series of readings. The whole' production will be under the supervision of Mr Mann. Mi* V. Harre will, as usual, contribute- the Shakespearian song in the reading, and a strong orchestra* will provide" the music incidental to the play. •• , The following is the cast of characters: The Duke of Venice; Mr A. T. Webb ; Antonio (a merchant of Venice), Mr, J; A. J^icol; Bassanio • (his kinsman, suitor likewise to Portia), Mr L. T. Burnard ; Salohla, Salhrin-o', Grat/iano- ahd Salerio" , {friends of Antonio and Bassanio), Messrs F. R.'Ball. (J. G. Bloore, W. Samson, and F. It. Ball respectively ; Lorenzo (in love with Jessica), Mr Ll. Etherington; Shylock (a rich Jew), Mr M. G. C' Pasco: Tubal (a Jew, his friend), Mr JV J. Rowley; Lancelot* Gobbo (the clown, servant to- Shylock), ' Master H. Robb ; Portia (a rich heiress), Miss Hilda Hogg,;' Nerissa (her waiting maid), ."Mis* Sievwright ; Jessica (daughter of Shylock'), Miss Florance. ■■ l .The.- first rehearsal wiU. be held on Monday night at the Gisborne School.
