TE KARAKA TOWN ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the above was held on' Wednesday evening, and . there was a* fair attendance of members! Several matters of importance were discussed, the fir§t*. .question, touched upon being the drainage of roads. The Engineer of the County..,- had .reported'.*-. that "drains ■were required i from Kipling road and Ippia street -to ;; the riyer., and in view of the fact, that the new vicarage, in the latter street is jshortly to be commenced, it was resolved to ask Mr Lewis to a]Jply at. the nest meeting •• of the County Council to have these . drains put in hand.
With regard to .telephone facilities it was stated by a member that 16 years ago the settlers of this district raised about dßßo..tOf_.pay for the erection -of a line to. Gisborne. - The understanding was that this amount should be refunded as soon as the line became self-sup-porting. This line is still in general use, and , oar»ies. a, great . deal of business,, but-, no, refund has -been made, and in .addition to this the service, is quite inadequate, "line engaged" being 1 the frequent reply -to a request for a-num-ber. It was decided- to take definite steps at once to obtain a material improvement. .
I The. subject of the present railway |. service was discussed at length, and it I was stated that under the new rules for goods traffic great . hardship is experienced.., A, member said th**jt if goods for .the country are delivered at. the station 'after- .noon on Saturdays they are not only not- received, but "are actually sent .back to the consignors. ... No goods are | carried on any evening- \rain, .iind the ; consequence is that if a consignment ari rives at the station after noon ori SatLusday it has. to be. taken bach, sent again before noon on -Monday, and then goes, forward- 1 by : r Tuesday ■> .morning's i; train. "Lnde"c the old system goods [were received up till 2 p.m., and carIried tho same night. Messrs A. M. | Lewis,. J. Mouat, >nd v C"v.A. Foote were appointed to Jay the matter before the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, in the hope of getting some redress. -
