THE SUMNER FATALITY.

A cablegram reports adverse comment in New Zealand at the action of the 'Royal Humane Society in aAvardingj medals to Solomons and Hay for attempted rescue at Sumner, and- stating that all Solomons did Avas to act as first man to a life-saving team which went to the rescue, and Avhich Avas unsuccessful. Solomons explains . that the published cable Avas the first he knew of tlie awards. The rescue Avas attempted under trying circumstances. The team was about to giA-e an exhibition of lifesaving near the pier on the beach Avhan the alarm Avas given, and the Arhole team raced along the sand, 600 or 700 yards, and then Solomons went out, the sea being exceedingly rough. The swimmers went • a long way from the shore, but the man disappeared before they reached him. Solomons is surprised at the reported attitude of the NeAv Zealanders, because the papers at the time Avere full of the attempted rescue, and complimented the life-saA T ers on their plucky efforts, Avhile the.
