Mr Massey paid a deep and eloquent tribute to the personal qualities and public character.pf the deceased legislator, with whom, although of different political opinions, he had been on terms of closest friendship during their "association in' the House. Mr Russell (Avon) seconded the motion, ; adding his testimony to , the general esteem m which. Mr Houston was held, both within and without Parliament. .'...'.. The motion was carried and the House adjourned till after dinner as a mark of respect to th© memory of the deceased gentleman. - -..'■■■.-... LANDS FQR SETTLEMENT. "The Lands for Settlement scheme is not going out -of operation," announced the Premier m Parliament last evening, "and legislation, tp. be' introduced next session, . will ' have the effect pf strengthening and widening the operations of the lands for settlement scheme, and I hope, as Minister of Lands, with the help of my colleagues, to make the scheme more useful to the people than it lias been m .the past.
