EXCURSION IN SCOTLAND.
DAIRY FARMER OX TOUR.
A p'aniphlet which came to hand' by the last mail states the programme of a flait'3' conference and excursion m Scotland, arranged under the auspices of the British .Dairy Farmers' Association. T/he • excuMjion covered a good deal 'of country, and lasted for nine days. JJurijig the tour various dairy farms were visited, the property of well-known men and several great institutions and manufactories were also inspected. The most interesting of these were Kirkpatrick's Bacon Factory, Royal Ohrichton Institution Home Farm, United Creameries, l^td., dairy school at Holme Farm and experimental ftfrm m connection with the West of Scotland College, the cheese bazaar m Glasgow, new cattle markets j\nd abattoir m JC'dinbuvgh, pmali holdings on ifirid.. reclaimed by a combination of waste products m land; labor, and' refuse. \ ■Manufacturing Works;' visited inoluded the engineering and ship-baildinß' works of Jcihn' Brown and. Co.. Greenock.. There the. visitors saw, m the main yard, H.M.&. ,Tiger, a battle cruiser of the greatest dimensions and ■highest power even' constructed ; s.si : Aquitana, a' quadruple screw turbine for. .the Cunard Companj', .which, when launched, will be the 'largest vessel afloat; a largo triple-screw ' v vessel With cfombiiiation machinery (reciprocating •'•and turbine) fqi' the Union Steam Ship Company .,of,>;e\v Zealand; m the yard were three torpedo-boat destroyers ior O.ia British Government, and |wo twin-siireSv steamers 'for foreign pwners ; m "fclie fitting -out ;basin; were H.M.A.S. Australia, a :battie cruiser for {he Australian Government, of 18,^30 ions displacement and 25 knots speed; the handsome twin-screw pleasure yacht Sapphire, foY the" Duke; of Bedford. . In the engineering- works there were many interesting parts of modern machinery installation, especially of turbine work, both of Parson's type and of the Browi-i Curtis type; 'm 'the development of "the Jatter the' company have taken ; a. very important r part. '."".' ; ' f At various places on the tour lectures were, delivered and papers read by meir of science and practical experience. In this connection . the subjects included, Records," by Mr William La-\V-son, N.D.A.J GLisgow ; "Preparationjand Use of Starters m Dairying," by Mr W. Stevenson, B.Sc. ; "How to Meet Foreign Competition, from a dairy farmer's point of view," by Mr A. dements, a large dairy farmer, whose special breed is purebred Ayrshires; "Tliree Yeai*s' Experiments m Millb Production," by Dr Lander, of the Edinburgh College of Agriculture; "Reclamation Progress and Results," by Mr W. Smith, J.P., of Edinburgh. : During the tour visits were made to well-known scenic resorts and places of historic interest. . Special terms were, .arranged, for ail who took the trip,' Which was obviously one of great 'interest ahd usefulness, calculated to do- ;a large amount of 'good; by enabling farm-, ers. to see the 'best/stock available m Scot-land 1 , and to gain experience and profit by meeting irieri of note interested n fiiraiing 'pursuits.
