GENTLE ANNIE QUARRY.

VISIT OF INSPECTION

I The Mayor (Mr W. Pettie), accompanied by Crs Collins.*, Webb, and Wade, paid a visit to the Gentle Ajinie quarry yesterday. To a representative 'of this paper to-day, his Worship said the visit was paid under adverse circumstances, ' ( on a cold, drizzling day, when a lime- . stone quarry naturaJly looked at its very [worst. "Notwithstanding this,, he was quit*?, satisfied with the position, which he considers is gradually improving. The No. 2 face continues to present a. good appearance. A shot was put in during the visit, with the result of sonic very good stone coming down, which i he thought convinced the Councillors present that from at least that portion 01 the quarry they could depend on goo-. results.. With regard to No. 1 face, the quarry manager was using every effort to open out and extend his operations, and was most sanguine of. good results. No doubt in both face3 a huge -amount of mullock was found, and must be handled and ,got rid of. Then thc stone itself was of a very mixed character, but when it, passed through the crusher a large percentage must be admitted to be good, useful metnl.\ Sometimes a small quantity of inferior stone was allowed to pass, but the cost of excluding this would .«o increase the Avorking expenses that it was considered lyetter to allow this metal to go into town and be used exclusively for patching, reserw ing the better class for permanent ' work, j 'Tie thought there coukl.be little doubt in tho mind of any reasonable man that'

there was abundance of metal showing, and although in the face of the quarry it might appear mixed, yet when it passed through the crusher it presented quite a different appearance. The Mayor added that he would be glad if those who adversely criticised the quarry would remember "that it was only in its initial stages, and that the Engineer had from the start stated that it would tak» fully two yeais to open and reach the location of a solid face. In the minds of gome of the Councillors present it was thought that the indications now pointed strongly in that direction. *
