SPIES IN THE SERVICE.

Mr T t W r Bowles,, who has just retired from the position of stationmaster at Addington,' was made a presentation m the Chamber of Commerce .by the Hon. 11. F. Wigram, M.L'C., on behalf of a number of Christchurch merchants. Tho presentation coasisted of a silver tea and coffee service, m a haudsome cn.se, and a gold albert. In replying, -Mi* Bowles said that the public did not receive the consideration Irom the Railway Department' that they should do. (Hear, hear.) He Avas sorry' to. say that there were m the service of the Department numbers of men who constituted themselves spies on the others, and poured tittle-tattle into the ears of those -m charge. These, men made an officer's life a burden to -him. He had S'lenty. qf work left m him,- but had een so worried by tale-bearing and departmental regulations that he had thought it better to retire.
