' lhe Ladies' Committee of the HockeyAssociation are working hn.rd to provideseats for the spectators who attend the hockey matches at the reserve. Through Mrs R, N. Jones, seats have been donated by the following gentlemen : Tho Mayor (Mr W. Pettie), Messrs F. Harris, W. F. Cederwall, G. EvansJ T. A. Coleman, Williams and Kettle, and Mrs R. jN. Jones. The seats will be placed m position as soon as possible. The sueI cess so far attained by the energetic committee is very satisfactory, and it is hoped that other well-wishers of the' Association will come forward with donations. While the 'heavy rain of last evening militated against a large attendance at ihe Methodist Church "At Home," •& fair, number came, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The schoolroom was tastefully .decorated. A good programme, of instrumental and vocal ni'.isic, along with a number of recitations, was -- submitted. The 7 Ladies' Guild prepared a dainty supper, which was thoroughly appreciated on such . a. night. The Rev. J. A. Lochore commended the work of the Guild, outlining some of its accomplishments during the past year. It- is evidently one of the "live" institutions m connection with the church. The minister specially voiced the 1 feelings, of the officebearers and old residents m extending a very cordial welcome, to new church! members and 1 attendants,- of whom there are ;.a large number. Another social function is to be held at an early date, when it is hoped better . weather conditions will prevail, and all the newcomers 1 will be present. /'Regarding the visit of "the.-. Rev. C. C' Grubb's. mission party to Gisborne, previously announced m our columns, l it has now been arranged that the party 1 will call at Gisborne for a week on their way from .Auckland to Wellington, and ■ will arrive on the 30th inst. The Rev. Mr Grubb took an active part m the fifth Christian Convention held at Wanganui at the beginning of this month. Reporting the proceedings of the Gp>g* vention, the Wanganui. Mr Grubb conducted l^ successful mission m Gisborne some 20 years ago, and his visit on that occasion is still fresh m the memory, of a number of local residents. ■A departure of considerable importance m the, working .of the Christchurch Technical College was reported at last meeting, the director (Mr Ji H. Howell) informing the Board of Governors that the Ladies' Advisory: Committee had initiated a scheme under which employ- 1 ment oould be found for students who had taken the domestio science course. The movement Avas based upon lhe course that is followed m connection Avith the commercial classes, and tlie director stated that already V four students had been placed m: suitable homes. Two of tha. best students had already taken up such work, and a number of others Svere prepared to do so m, a week or two. The committee had .decided on an indoor uniform, and the rate of remuneration liad been fixed at 12s M' per week, with an increment of Is per week each month lip to 15is^d.!'
