FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE BAY

The unfortunate man William Burton, vho had his head crushed on 'Saturday by a frozen quarter 'of, beef falling 017 him during loading, operations m connection with the Tyser Co.'s Morere,, succumbed to his. injuries during Saturday" evening. In conversation with a Herald reporter, Captain Linklater, of the s.s. Marere, stated that deceased was sitting on the barge as the carcase was .being hoisted on to the liner. When the quarter fell it struck the man on the face, and he was knocked overboard into th-3 sea. He was promptly rescued by his ' comrades, and upon seeing the condition the man was m, Captain Linklater ordered a boat to be lowered to take the injured man ashore. At the same time he hoisted, signals for medical assistance. Five minutes after the accident happened deceased was on his way ashore *m the ship's boat, "and," remarked the captain, had the signals been seen ' from shore and a launch sent out the man couldv not ha>e been got I ashore much quicker than lie was." The, accident occurred', between 12.30 and I 'o'clock, and on the boat's arrival at the wharf Dr. Williams was m attendance and the ambulance was also there ready to convey the unfortunate stevedore to the /hospital. . The body of deceased wa« formally viewed by the Coroner (Mr W.A. Barton) to-day, and identified, so that an order for burial could be given, and; a,n inquest will be held either! on Thursday or Friday next. The funeral took place this afternoon, there being a large following, many of the waterside workers being present to pay their last respects to their departed comrade.

The son of Captain Linklater, of the Tyser Go's s.s. Marere, now m the roadstead, had the misfortune to break his arm yesterday. He tripped on a raised, step as he was leaving a cabin on the steamer, and fell heavily on the deok, causing a fracture of the arm. He was brought to Gisborne m the ship's boat, and. the injured limb was set by Dr. Williams.
