CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION.

WELLINGTON, this da,y. The Premier says that the Civil Service Commission is complete. He is awaiting the Governor's approval. The commission Consists of four business men of outstanding actuarial capacity, whose names will guarantee a' report 'placing the civil service m a more useful position from the public viewpoint. They • will sit as a Royal Commission. > Later. — The Government has , appointed Messrs William Hunt • (Invercargill), James Macintosh (Wellington), Peter Barr (Duriedin), and Thomas Finlayson (Auckland) a Royal Commission to inquire into the efficiency of the unclassified departments of the Civil Service, to report by the 25th June! An? inquiry is. to be made into the working of the various unclassified departments/ with a view^ to simplifying rthe procedure, preventing dupjicationy and' generally adopting such methods as will increase the efficiency of the service, ensure due recognition of merit, - quicken the despatch" of business, and* ascertain if there is need m the public .interest for more co-operation between the departments m their business relations, and for better facilities to be given and received, m order to remove unnecessary formality and delay, having regard to the vfact that- they axe all engaged m the State business.
