FIRES.

FAMILY'S NARROW ESCAPE. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. ' A fire occurred m a two storeyed house occupied by Mr James Bottle m Beresford street early this morning, the house being almost entirely destroyed. The occupants, Mr Bottle and his wife and six children, and two| countrymen of Mr Bottle's, escaped with great difficulty, practically nothing being saved. The house was owned by Mr Coles of Onehunga, and the insur? ances on it. are not available. FIRE ON A TRAWLER, NAPIER, this day. An outbreak of fire occurred on the trawler Savaii but was suppressed before it had time to spread out of the engine room, and cabin. Damage to the extent of £300 was done. The vessel was not insured. \ About 7.45 last evening a fire broke out m the back portion of the shop occupied by Mr W. Lewis, draper, m Gladstone road. There are four compartments altogether m the building, which is owned by Mr W. Birch, and Mr Lewis occupied the, two -front portions ;of the building. The seat of the tiro ' was m one. of the empty rooms, which contained nothing but sweepings from the -draper's shop. The place was lock•ed.up on Saturday night, aniLas far as i Mr Lewis was, concerned, was not visited again ; consequently no reason can be assigned for the outbreak. The brigade .was quickly on the scene m response to an alarm given, and succeeded m confining the fire to the two unoccupied rooms, although the offices m Grey street occupied by Messrs E. Oaks and A. Hood, had a narrow escape, as the flames were just beginning to break through the partition. However, their premises suffered very little damage, although a quantity of stationery was affected by water. Fortunately the fire did not get into Mr Lewis' drapery establishment, but the water from the back ran over the floor and damaged ,such goods as were low down; it is that £50 will replace the goods affected. The loss is covered, by insurance, m the Yorkshire and South British offices. Tlie .interior of the two unoccupied rooms was badly charred.
