At ;the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame, being attachable to anyone. The jury added a rider, recommending tliat all steamship companies should allow sufficient time to replaoe the parts of. hatches, and that some person, should be responsible for carryirig out this work. John Norman fligg, aged 21, and Robert Pomery, aged 17, were arrested yesterday charged with the theft of a steward's portmanteau, containing articles worth £60, aboard the Aorangi m Wellington yesterday week. Pomery was employed "on the boat, while Rigg was a hotel porter. Both disappeared after the. theft. They were traced to Auckland, and reipandbd to appear m Wellington; WELLINGTON, this day. A private .cablegram announces the death at London on Thursday last of Mr Joseph E. Nathan, v aged 77. Deceased was an early settler of Wellington, and was a prominent merchant here. He was one of the^founders of the Manawatu Raihvay Company. He had been living m London for many years past. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The inquiry concerning the fire which destroyed Lloyd's store, the Oddfellows' hall, and another building at . Woodend on March. 25 was concluded to-day. The Magistrate fournd a verdict that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. DUNEDIN, this day. Tlie Council Chamber was filled for the eighth annual meeting last night of the Otago branch of tlie' Navy League. Mr Ho'skingy K.C., Dean Fitchett and Dr Cblquhoun made appropriate speeches. The secretary reported that the paid membership totalled 447, and associates and school membership 1841, and the inc6me was over £440. The Otago branch was the largest numerically and financially m the Dominion. Mr James Allen, M.P.,. was elected president. <
