MILKING RECORDS.
(To tbe' Editor of the Herald.) Sir,— The yield of milk; 3851b5, reported by you as having been obtained from four cows in a day is fairly "talh" The credulous ' may be impressed, biit; hot the experienced cowman. Accept-j iii" 'lOlbs as the weight of a gallon "''off* milk, it means that each cow in a dayl produced over nine and 'a" half gallons' of milk. It is a pity that -the •author!" Of the statement ; did not vouchsafe* thetest. Fpr butter production, or indeed; cheese, the weight ofvmilk without giv-i ing the test is valueless. Lady of Cliff-' 'side. Mr Lovelock's champion cow for! weight of milk, is now quit* eclipsed. 4 Her authenticated yield for four Bays; was 3031b5, or 75.761bs a ' day, Avith-*a/ 3.2 Lest, yielding for seven days 21.245? pounds of butter. This is a good deal under what that great ' Jersey cow,' Grannie's Girl, produced. These four phenomenal cows have sent poor Lady of Cliffside kite -high, and a8 the Dominie Sampson would exclaim, "Four of them, it is prodigious !" A Jersey* cow, Retford Girl, No. 214-N.Z.J.H.8., owned by -Mr Day, of Tamahere^ ."javd only *43i'251b«- of miilk in a day^ but produced 21.8351bs of butter fat ih f?even days. A -hundred pound's < of -butter fat, should yield 'from 112 to 1161bs of commercial butter. It is not the heavy milker with a low test that .-pays, -but the average milker with a -hi;jjh test, such as Retford Girl. — I a,m, etc., . '•'•'•QOW •SPANKER.
