EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

■■ A meeting of the Gisborne Branch of the Hawke's Bay Educational Institute was held in the Gisborne . School this morning. The attendance was fairly representative, Mr J. McLeod (President) of Ormond, occupying the chair. The chairman reported that Mr, Marshall, otf Matawherp, a prominent member of the Institute, was lying ill at the local hospital. A motion of sympathy, moved by the president, and seconded by Mr R. Cole (vice-president), was carried.

Correspondence from, Mr R'. B. Holmes, general secretary, was read, and, on the motion of Mr Rowley, it was decided to recommend to the Education Board ' that the holidays for this year be; similar^ to last year's. The meeting noted that the Education Board, at its last meeting, had remarked against the excessive number of holidays granted by some committees.! Speakers drew attention to the fact that, on account of the compulsory holidays of last year, and on account of the elections, the number of holidays, could not but have been exceeded/ inasmuch: as committees were allowed no latitude whatever. It was felt, however, that the number allowed by the Board was quite reasonable during ordinary, years. Mr R. Cole, delegate, to the annual meeting of the N.ZiE.I. at Timaru last January, presented . his report. A hearty vote of thanlts was accorded to him. A member of the Institute, who was. -also present at the annual' meeting in Timaru, spoke in high terms of the efficient manner in which Mr Cole had carried out his duties as delegate. The meeting resolved to protest to the Hawke's Bay management committee of the Institute that the remits from Hawke's Bay for the Timaru meeting were for^wardeo! to the Institute secretary top- late to appear on the order pape*.' The delay in forwarding school books from the Board was commented upon, and it was decided to write to Napier, pointing out how the work, of the schools was seriously inconvenienced this year through the non-arrival of the books, and that the headmasters in the Poverty Bay district protested against the changes of the choice of books made by the local headmasters upon the invitation of the Board. It was resolved that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr H. Hoare, M.1.C.E. ; manager of the Gisborne Gasworks, for his invitation to the Institute to pay a visit of inspection to the local gasworks, when he would be pleased to give a* lecture on gas manufacture to its members, and that the invitation be, gladly' accepted. It was left £° the secretary (Mr Leslie) to arrange a suitable date with Mr Hoare. come discussion arose as to tlie action of the secretary of the Education Board in making changes in the staffs of some of the schools in the Poverty Bay district without consulting, or even notifying tlie headmasters concerned of such intended changes. It was felt that the heiuhnasterß were entitled to more consid(>rntioi:. Mr Bean, teacher, of Matawai, was eiontctl a member of the Institute. Tlie aecretnt-y made an appeal that those/ present slwuld help him to enrol those teachers in the Poverty Bay district who were holding themselves aloof from the Institute, and pointed . out sonic id" tlie benefits tlnat had been gained by tlie N.'A.E.I. for the teachingprofesaicn in general. The president strongly endorsed the secretary's remarks.
