LAST NIGHT'S TELECRAMS.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. At the Police .Court to-day the wises of 48 young pien charged with having tailed tjd render personal service under part 6 of the Defence Act, 1909, were dealt with. A good niany names were not answered to, several hnvin,? been pronounced medically unfit for service. Most of the accused pleaded guilty, and offered no objection to the decision of the Court. of £2 and 7s costs were imposed m some cases. Others showed good cause for exemption, and their excuses were given attention to. Others were let off on paying costs. Several stated that they would not pay the fine. HASTINGS, last night The property known as Beecroft'a block, subdivided into 23 business sites, vitth a frontage to Queen street and Kafcunu road, were offered at auction this afternoon. Twelve sold at £60 a foot, one at £50 a foot, and one at £52 10s a foot. CHRISTCHURCH, last night. There were two further arrests, this morning for failure to pay fines inflicted for breaches of the Defence Act. Edward Henry Edwards, who failed to pay a fine and costs' amounting to £2 10s, was taken to Lyttelton to work out the alternative of, 21 days' imprisonment', and Walter James Hooper, who failed to pay a similar fine, was taken m charge for a similar term. It is understood that warrants are out for the arrest of five others' who have broken the Act and have failed to submit to the penalities indicted by the magistrate.
