ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
William Kemp, 21 years of age, employed m the machine room of the N.Z. Times, was threading paper into one of the rotary presses, when his left hand was drawn between the cylinders. His cries attracted the attention of a fellow--wqrker. Twho. stopped the press. By that ti'hie sv r_emp's v *aTm had' been crushed almost up to the elbow, and it was some minute's^BeTore he could be released.' He was' removed' to the hospital, where his arm was amputated. While lightering on the Indrapura m the Napier Toadstead on Tuesday, Andrew Maylund, aged about 23 years, * had his leg broken. He was removed to the Napier hospital. The mate of the Te Aroha. Mr F. Nielsen, had his foot badly crushed through a heavy pile skidding on the slippery wharf, at Wairoa. His companion assisting him had a narrow escape from injury. The injured man was at once conveyed to the hospital, and is progressing favorably.
Mr F. L. Aspinall, district land registrar, Napier, met with a nasty accident at Taradale , while doing something to his motor-car. He had spilt' sorrie beij_ine on his clothes and m the shed m which the car is stored. Some time afterwards he was standing near' the machine, when the benzine suddenly became ignited. Mr Aspinall managed to get the car and a gig put of the shed and then returned; and put put the flames. While so engaged he "was somewhat badly burnt from the chin downwards.
Mr D. Arnott, cheiriist, of Bourne, New South Wales, had a remarkable escape from serious injury recently. In a somnambulistic walk he went over a balcony, falling a distance of 14 feet, and only broke a small bone of the forearm.
*!"• -An Austrian named' John Bacicx met with an accident while working at the railhead near Kaiwaka on Monday afternoon.' He was' "oil the 'engine engaged at the works, when he lost his balance and fell on .to the line, with th© result that Jlis left foot was completely severed by • the whfeelof the engine. The unfortunate man, who was suffering greatly from shock, was brought into Auckland by special train.
