TO-DAY'S PROCEEDINGS.

Proceedings for the second day of the band contest commenced at 9.30 a.m. to-day, when the solo competitions were resumed. The first to be taken was the B Hat baritone solo, the piece chosen being "Tito Mattel's Non E' Ver," arranged by J. Ord Hume. Seven out of the nine entrants competed, and the playing was uniformly good, as will bo understood when it is seen that there was only a difference of six points be- I tween the highest and lowest. As was to be expected, there -..was. only a very moderate attendance at * Hi.--Majesty's Theatre, but those who were present were amply repaid by hearing music of a distinctly high class. In the baritone solo the judge's placings were as follow : — > R. Boyd (Wanganui CSty),' 49pts. ... 1 J. Cosgrove (Gisborne City), 47pts 2 W. Benson (Wanganui City), 46pt5.... 3 H. McKennie (Gisborne C), 43pts. 6 In the B flat bass solo, the three entrants took part, the Gisborne competitor securing a popular verdict. Thy selection was "Qui Tollis," by A. M. Booker (Palmerston N.), 31pts. ... 3 Ih connection with the side-drum competition, wliich takes place at the Park on Thursday afternoon, the question of! post entries is being considered, which may produce much larger fields. At the conclusion of the cornet solos to-night, one or two members of the visiting bands will give items .-while the judge is making up the points for the competition. An effort is being made to arrange a bass drum playing exhibition by Conductor Berryman, of the Palmerston North Band, who is a pastmaster m the art.
