Neighbours, Westport Garrison): Andante. Opens with nice tone ; cadenza very nicely played; solo con teiierezsai split U slightly at bar 11; 15 to 17 very nicely played; quaver at 22 too short; ..same remark applies io bar 2o; neverPhclcss is playing very nicely'; piu mosso, bar 8 quaver D just a little too snort; vi>loce very lairly played nevertheless'; tempo lino, cadenza very fairly played; solo tenerezza, playing very nicely here, though .si vie a lit tie .sun; quavers at 19 and 21 too snort; \ni\ mosso very lairly played; con ahuundona not sullicient lorce here, this should be played with violence so to speak; cadenza very miriy played indeed; last note slightly out of tune, tin the whole a very fair perlorniauce — (-(4 points). ao. 2 (. \V. J. JHcKenniu, Gisborue City): Opens with nice full tone, inougn just a little iiiiru m quality; cadenza wen piayed; con ti-nerezza, style somewhat mei-nanical ; lalreied slightly on G's at bur 16; last note oar 22 i«io'* short; very fairly piaj-ed nevertheless; piu mosso, veioce very fairly played; t' at bur 9 slightly out ot tune; tempo into, cadenza well managed, excepting lor one stigut blemish; teiierezwi, quavers not quite broad enough; style a little still; should let nmiself go more ireely; tone fairly good here; oar 18 last note too short, otherwise the poco agitato is very well played; piu mosso, very lairly rendereu; con aobandona evidently not understood; caUenza very nieelj playeti. A very lair performance^ — (43 points;. No. i> (11. Graham, l'olmeistoii Norm): Opens with nice tone; sveeral notes played indistinctly iv cadenza — not a success; con tenerezza played with nice tone and expression uere; cioicess well managed; bar 21 wrongly pnrased; should take breath at the end of the oar; piu mosso, rail well managed, also veloee; tempo uiio, laitered slightly on C m cadenza, nevertheless very well piayed indeed; solo tenerezza, playing with nice expression and good tone; uolccss well managed, also poco agitato; piu mosso, stentando not ooserved; con aboandona played with insuflicient force here; cadenza very well played. On the whole a very tuneful performance — (45 points). i\o. <i (W. tfeiison, Wanganui City): Minim at liar 1 not given its mil value; cadenza nicely played; solo con tenerezza, relaying witn nice tone; dolcess well managed; bar 21 wrongly phrased; quavers at 26 and 25 a uttle too short, otherwise agitato well, played; piu mosso very lairly played indeed; tempo imb, cadenza very well piayed indeed; tenerezza, piuying very sweetly here; dolcess well managed, also poco agitato, excepting that the quavers at 19, and 'ii just a little too short; piu mosso well managed, though con babaniiona 'evidently not understood; cadenza very well played. Keen, Whangarei): Indistinct articulation at bars 1 and Z; cadenza very fairly managed; con tenerezza out of tune at 9; split G bar 11; tone a little hard m quality; dolcess well played; bar 20 wrongly read; quavers at 23 and 24 too .short; moderately well played; piu mosso stentando not properly observed; caaenza very fairly played; tempo imo cadenza, turn too hurried; would bo an improvement to play this a little slower; solo tenerezza, faltered on C's at bar 6; dolcess H to 13 well managed; articulation indistinct at 16; very fairly played; piu mosso, stentando nt 6 evidently not understood; same remark applies to the con abbandona; cadenza very well played indeed. A moderately good performance^ — (44 points). No. 7 (It. Boyd, Wanganui City): Opens with nice tone; cadenza splendidly played; eon tenerezza, mezzo staccato at fjf not properly observed; playing with splendid tone and with due appreciation of the subject under treatment; \pry well played indeed; piu piosso, including cadenza, splendidly played— quite a traat this; tempo imo, cadenza splendidly rendered; this is evidently a soloist; tenerezza, bar 7 wrongly phrased; best tone so fur; dolcess wel| ■ managed, also poco agitato; piu mosso receiving proper treatment at the hands of tins player; con abbandona very fairly managed; cadenza very well played. Palmerston North): Andante, • not R'-ijitlv m tune; tone very fair; indistinct ortfi-ulaM-m at 10; much out pf tune at 14; also from 17 to 20; split " f at 25; i G not a success nt 28; style too mechanical; I 33 Io 38 very fairly played indeed; 24 split! I- ; still out of tune; 50 to 53 very fairly played; turn at 56 not a success; intonation a little faulty m lirst cadenza, otherwise very' fairly played; piu mosso, second cadenza mod. l r*ii.tely well played. On the whole v very nice performance — (43 points). | In' the B flat baritone solo, the accompaniment, for the winner was played by ' Miss Shearsby, and others Avho played accompaniments were Mrs Hamlin, Messrs Strong and Russell. Mr Strong ; played the accompaniment for the Avin-j ncr of the B flat bass solo, the other ! accompanists being Miss Shearsbv and ! Mr Russell. * | In the afternoon the E flat bass solo j Avas taken, the test being the extracts J from Wagner's "Lohengrin." entitled! "HeaA*en m Prayer Thine Aid I Seek" • and "Good Subjects of Brabant." Ten out of the thirteen entrants took part, and once again the playing Avas distinctly good m the majority of cases. ; The competitors were os folloAv : W. Penhall : (Wanganui City), F. Tuunieliffe (Wan- [ ganui City), Mat. Hale (Westport Gar- I rison), M. Codyre (Westport Garrison), : C. Webster (Gisborne City), P. Johnson (Gisborne City), E. A. Parr (Whangarei Municipal), H. Calkin (Whangarei Municipal), J. Baxter (Waihi Federal), F. Heath (Waihi Federal). • The winner was P. Johnson (Gisborne j City), 48 points; M. Codyre (Westport Garrison) second, 47. Mrs Hamlin play- i ed the accompaniment for the Avinner. I Up to the present Gisborne bandsmen j have scored three wins, one second, and one third. | Thii judge before announcing the re- ; suit said the competitors liad given him a very severe task, and he had had soni-.* difficulty m arriving at a decision. "1 can assure you," he added, "there has been some very fine play indeed." Th? principal failings had been incorrect phrasing m places, and Avant of sustain- ; ing poAver; also a lack of metrical and rhythmical assent.
In' the theatre to-morrow morning th-> side-drum competition Avill be commenced at 9.30 a.m., and it will be immediately followed by the B flat ilugel horn solo, which is timed to commence about 10.15 a.m. In the afternoon the tenor and bass trombone solos will be taken, and m the eA*ening, at Victoria Domain, at 7.30, the A and B grade bands Avill play the first test selection. The A grade selection is "Mascotte"' (Andran), and that for the B grade "J^s Hugenots" (Meyerbeer).
