CORRESPONDENCE.
♦ , • LIFE-SAVING CLUB. (To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, Might I write a few lines on a subject which deserves and requires special attention m Gisborne. The recent sad fatality on our beach recalls the^ question more forcibly. I refer to the advisability of forming a- life-saving club, and would suggest that this be «'• ne m connection with the local Swim--1 ing Club. It would, no doubt, involve cixi -Tderable expense* and therefore could not be undertaken without assistance by so young a club as our Swimming Club is, but with a little monetary help from the Borough Council, say £20 or £30, the club could do the rest. The Council is about to build' bathing sheds on the Kaiti beach, amd with those al-r-?ady on the Waikanae, there -would be jjlcnty of accommodation for life-belts, red-, and other life-saving appliances. As n other towns, it would be necessary to have members attain a certain standard of efficiency before being ad' •rnitted, both with regard to Bwimming and to rendering first aid. Some of our doctors, I know, would be quite willing to instruct .m the latter branch/ and, altogether, there is no reason why Gisborne should not boast of a very strong Surf and Life Saving Club.. It is really a matter of great importance to a town like Gisborne, with its extensive beaches, where so many indulge m surf bathing, arid it would bo a splendid thing if the Borough Council and the Swimming Ciub could join hands and consider the matter without delay.— l a-m, etc., SWIMMER.
