Mrs Susan Smith, of Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, who has just celebrated her ninety-sixth birthday, has made six journeys to New Zealand, her last being at the age of ninety-two, when she manifested her hardiness as a sailor by appearing at the breakfast table one morning alone. Advice has been received by the Borough authorities from the New Zealand State Guaranteed Advances Office, intimating that an advance of £900 has been remitted m respect of the new hospital loan. The Borough contribution is covered by a loan of £5215. The Department charged solicitor's foe £1 ls and £ per cent, commission fee, £4 10s.. A somewhat peculiar position has occurred m connection with the introduction of saleswomen into certain business departments m Sydney, which hitherto has been controlled solely by males. In fact, the male shop assistant is finding the woman a somewhat thorny subject. The Shop Assistants' Union m Sydney is now taking up the cudgels, and de- j manding equal pay for men and women shop assistants. In one establishment two women were introduced, with the rer I suit that the male assistants forthwith ceased work until an agreement was en- j tered into that the women were not to sell above the value of 3d or 6d. There is now an agitation for increasing the rates of pay for females m departments where formerly men only were employed.
