OLD AMERICAN WARSHIPS.
AN UNUSUAL OFFER.
WASHINGTON, November 28. News is forthcoming here to-day that a syndicate has been formed to' buy the American battleships lowa, Indiana and M- achujsetts, and the cruiser Minnesota for £1,600,000. These vessels still figure (mi the navy list as effective, and were laU'y reviewed by the President m New York harbor, buit they are for the most part nearly obsolete, arid m the course of a Bhort time will be sold as junk by public auction. On behalf of the syndicate, department officials and Congressmen have been approached with a view to ascertaining whether a law could be rushed through permitting the speedy sale of the craft to the purchaser, whose name has not been made^ known. It is believe^ that the ships are either for Turkey or China, but the syndicate gives no details onV'that iieiad. The 1 chief, argument m favor of the special sale is that£l,6oo,ooo would buy a new "battleship to replace the old ships, '-.whereas if the craft enumerated were .offered at auction within the next 3'ear,oV so the proceeds would be relatively insignificant. •
