DASHEO INTO THE SEA.
NEWCASTLE, November 3, The heavy seas now sweeping across the harbor entrance were this morning directly responsible for an accident that was rather startling. A couple of trucks heavily laden with huge rocks from the Government quarry were being hauled by a 25-ton locomotive towards the end of the northern breakwater. When the locomotive reached the tip-rails from which the truck-loads -f rock used in extending tho breakwater seaward are toppled over into the sea, it got>out of control owing to the seas having caused a depression in the' line. Down the unsuspected incline the locomotive dashed .towards the breakwater's end. The driver sprang oft and got v out of danger, just as the locomotive plunged into the sea, with the train of trucks. The locomotive was caught on the rocks,' and lies not quite submerged, but in such a position that in another few hours the seas will have pounded it to pieces, in 40 feet of water. The mishap means a Joss of about £600 to th« Publio Works Department.
