THE UPWARD MARCH. "Boosting Gisborne" is in the air just noAv. There is a feeling of confidence amongst the commercial men of the town Avhich impels them to put shoulders to the Avheel in some concerted to! push forAvard the fortunes 'of the 'town, and district. That their confidence is well placed Js known to every person who -has studied the statistics of the; place. The shipping trade, the post and telegraph receipts, the land valuations, the export land import returns,' the Customs collections; the money order and savings, bank deposits, the agricultural and pastoral statistics, and, we may. add', the .circulation ofi.th-d leading neAvspaper, all attest lo the growth of prosperity .'in' this region, ip. which settlement is' so rapidly * expanding. The Customs cbllec-' tions are as good an indication as anj> of.'the gro*wth of trade and expansion of settlement, and Ave are indebted to. Mr HoAvie, tlie local Collector, for the foi-. loAving table showing the increase of Customs receipts at' T this port in comparison with those of three other secondary toAvns of about the same population as Gisborne. The figures; show in striking manner the leaps and bounds that' local trade is .taking.. .Gisbcrrne's receipts have not quite reached the' dimensions, of the South Canterbury dapital, .but once the shipping companies concede to this port the privilege of • receiving' direct shipments, which Timaru has enjoyed for some years, there is little doubt * that the volume of dutiable merchandise (a good deal of which at present comes through Auckland arid Wellington houses, . and goes to sAA'ell the Customs returns of those centres) avi'U considerably increase, and at least '.bring us up level Avith Timaru. Already Gisborne trade has passed' the Taranaki total,' and Nelson is being- left -a long "way in the rear". Tlie figures are as follbAv :' . Gisborno. Timaru. Taranaki. Nelson.
