WHAT ABOUT WAIHI NOW?

A FLOORER FOR FOSTER

TELEGRAM FROM REV. SMAILES

At the No-license meeting the other night Mr J. Foster, from Waihi, stated that he had the authority of the Rev. G. W. Smailes for stating that the advertisement of the Gisborne Licensed Victuallers re-publishing the Rev. Smaile's speech on No-license at the Cambridge Conference was false and untrue. Mr Foster said he had spoken to the Rev. Smailes just before " leaving WaihU for i Gisborne. > and *> Mr >. Smailes atfct_a*'>he -hadfviiot'Aad&'Gcated « No-license since Mr Poole, M.P., came here from America seven years ago, and that the alleged speech of his (the Rev. Smailes) at Cambridge, re-printed in the Herald as a Trade advertisement, was untrue and false.

A telegram was sent to the Rev. Smailes yesterday asking whether Foster's statements were correct, and if he was accurately reported by the press at Cambridge. A wire was received from the, Rev. Smailes (Waihi) this morning, as follows: —

"'Foster's statement that I have not supported No*license for seven years not correct. Speech at Cambridge referred to was that No. license as a remedial measure was inadequate and defective, and the only logical position for Temper, ance reformers was out-and-out Prohibition.

(Signed) REV. SMAILES. Elsewhere in this issue will bo 'found the Rev. Smaile's remarks at Cambridge, and Mr Foster is invited to explain his statements on Thursday night and inform the Gisborne electors whether they should believe Mr Foster or the Rev. Smailes, as there is a serious discrepancy between the two. Every thoughtful elector will agree with tho Rev. Smailes that No-lciensc is inadequate and defective, and to combat i% ihe onlysensible vote is to strike out the bottom line on both ballot-papers. ***
