iij$ECH ENDS ABRITPTLY
A team representing the Alhambra Cricket ■Club journeyed out to Te Karaka yesterday to piny 1 h match against a Te Karnka eleven. •Unfortunately..' 'the match, which would have provided an exciting finish, terminated rather abruptly. It commenced *at' 10.15 a.m., on a 1 matted turf wicket, which was somewhat bumpy. Scholium (captain \of Alhambra) won the toss, and elected to bat. The Gisbornites were, all disposed- of for 75, the principal scorers being Scholium 21 and McLisky 16. Mo Mnhon took four wickets for 31 runs, Sefton three for, 14, and. Andrew three for 13. When the adjournment was made for lunch Te Ka- \ raka.had lost two wickets for 43. After lunch they carried their total to 84. The principal! scorers were : Southcombe, an ex-Sydney player, who played a pretty innings for 27, McMahon 19, and Sefton 11. Scholium and McLisky were the most successful trundlers for Alhambra, each securing four wickets; McLeod and Atkinson also captured* one each. , ft was then nearly 2.30 p.m., and a misunderstanding arose 'as to the time at which stumps were to_ be drawn, it being evident the matter had not been properly arranged. The Te Karaka skipper (McMahon)* said 5 p.m. was the. time, oecing the match commenced at 10 a.m., and that that had been agreed to, but Scholium urged that play should continue till 6 p.m. However, Alhah'ibra went in a second time, apparently with instructions to hit out. But the bowling of McMahon and Sefton proved too, difficult, and when an adjournment was made for afternoon tea Alhambra had lost two wickets for 41. The dispute over the time of closing down again arose, Scholium saving thev Would not continue unless they ployed till 6 o'clock. To this McMahon did not agree, arrangements having been made by the To ; Karaka team to entertain the visitors at dinner before, they -returned to town." Consequently the Gisborne team left the field, leaving Td Karaka t|§e winners on the first innings.
Tho visitors were entertained at luncheon at the hotel, and tho afternoon tea wob provided by Meßdamcs Footo and Dutton.
