The largest buildings in the block are Macky, Logan, and Caldwell's premises and the City Chambers. The business places include W. Holdsworth, bootmaker; Howey Walker, dentist ; F. and W. Fowler, importers ; Woodward, tobacconist ; London and Berlin Piano Company; Selfs, tailor; S. Stone, bootmaker ; Singer Sewing Machine Company ; Hill and' Plummer, paperhangers ; John Todd, tailor. As far as can be ascertained., a good deal of the blocki belongs to Messrs Macky, Logan, Caldwell and Co., whose warehouse is now completely gutted. Later. — The flames are now apparently burning less furiously, and may be got under before the whole block goes. .Later.'— The fire is now under control. The flames were confined to Macky, Logan and? Caldwell's soft goods warehouse, which is completely gutted. The firm were carrying the new season's soft goods. The loss of the building and stock is estimated at £150,000. The building and stock are well insured in various New Zealand offices. r .' The brigade put up a great fight. The firm have been in business t here since 1881.
